“All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my mother.” This well-known quote from Abraham Lincoln expresses a depth of appreciation many of us at Morales Funeral Home feel every day – but especially on Mother’s Day! Like Lincoln did hundreds of years ago, families around Houston know how important it is to show gratitude to the incredible women who gave us the gift of life.

Family means so much to all of us here at Morales Funeral Home. We have a rich history of family ownership in the Houston area stretching back to 1931, and we take great pride in offering our neighbors the highest quality funeral services. We love being a part of this wonderful community, and because of our work, we know that while this can be a day of celebration and fun for many, for others – particularly those who have lost their mothers – it is a time of pain and grief. Please know, whatever your circumstances, we are here for you and you can reach out to us anytime. We also have a number of grief resources on our website for you if you are grieving your mother’s absence this time of year.

For those of us who are blessed enough to still have our mom’s on earth with us, we should all be reminded of how precious every moment with her truly is. As Mother’s Day approaches, here are a few fresh ideas for showing gratitude to the woman who has poured time, love, and attention into our lives.

    1. Write down or tell your mother a specific reason you’re thankful for her. Maybe it was the way she made you feel special on your birthday, or how she was patient with you on good days and bad. Instead of presenting her with a general note of thanks, offer details to make her feel cherished.
    2.  Cook her dinner or bring her treats she likes. Learning about your mom’s favorite foods – and then setting them in front of her – will send a message that you want her to enjoy her day in her own way.
    3. Take a special photo. Since moms tend to be the ones behind the camera – here ’s a perfect opportunity to create a memory that will last a lifetime. This doesn’t have to be a formal, posed shot. Rather, ask a loved one to capture you and your mother in a casual pose, like sitting together talking on the couch, cooking together, or while taking a walk outside. You will cherish this in the years to come.
    4. Create a “mom’s-favorite-things” gift bag. The possibilities are endless! This might include a book or magazine your mother would enjoy, a candle, lotion, fun treats, her favorite flowers – any items you think will make her happy. Purchase a pretty bag or basket and present with a smile!
    5. Volunteer with or donate to your mom’s favorite charity. Chances are, your mother has an organization or a cause she holds close to her heart. If possible, schedule a time to volunteer together. Or give a donation in her name. This is a gift that keeps on giving – in honor of a very special woman.

From our family to yours, whether you find yourself celebrating with your family this Mother’s Day or grieving a loss, we are thinking of you and are here for support when you need it most. Never hesitate to reach out to us.
