(Houston, TX) – As summer vacation winds down and August arrives, teachers, parents and students begin bracing themselves for another successful school year and the Morales Memorial Foundation starts recruiting volunteers and gathering donations for their annual Back to School Supplies Giveaway.  Over $30,000 in supplies and prizes are given away each year to serve 2,000 children in Houston’s Greater East End.  The Morales Memorial Foundation invites the local community to embrace education and join their 21st Annual Back to School Supply Giveaway Health Fair at Morales Funeral Home (2901 Canal St.) on Saturday, August 18.

The first Hispanic funeral home and one of the few remaining family-owned funeral homes in Houston, Morales resonates with the East Downtown community as one of the neighborhood’s most influential entities.  Christina Morales has continued her grandmother, Angela V. Morales’ tradition of giving back to the predominantly Mexican-American residents of the East End by hosting events like the Giveaway and donating to local institutions like Community Family Centers, The Houston Hispanic Association of Media Professionals, Houston Community College, AAMA and Pasadena ISD.  The Morales Memorial Foundation was created by Angela Morales in 1993 to empower, inspire and educate the Latino Community for future leadership.  “The rapid change in East End is an opportunity for residents to benefit as well as contribute to the area and education is vital for this to happen” says Christina Morales.

The Back to School Supplies Giveaway is an opportunity for the foundation to give back to the community and provide its future leaders with basic tools needed to start the school year off with confidence. Along with the school supplies, students will receive free immunizations, sports physicals, dental screenings and Medical/CHIP application assistance courtesy of CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic. They may also enter to win a bicycle or laptop.  Families can enjoy music, refreshments, Zumba, and take photos with The Houston Astros Shooting Stars!  The event will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 10 a.m. No registration is required. Families interested in attending the event should arrive early the day of the event as supplies will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. The event is free to the public and each child must be present in order to receive supplies.
