Finding Joy in Autumn

While spring is typically associated with rebirth and new beginnings, autumn is typically perceived simply as the beginning of the end.  Throughout spring and summer, we watched the vegetation all around us flourish, and we made our best effort to flourish along with it and to fight off any storms that may have come our way. Now, the leaves begin to fall slowly as the breeze gently pushes them down and soon the sidewalks are covered in confetti-like colors. The colorful leaves are the first invitation to partake in and enjoy the upcoming holiday season. The air begins to get crisper and cooler and provides us with a cold yet refreshing sensation. This transition phase from summer to fall typically prompts us to begin to reflect on all that has happened to us, all that we’ve overcome, as well as all that we have accomplished. Every year has its ups and downs, and it is important to use this time to reflect and find joy and gratefulness in all that life has taught us this year.

As beautiful as it can be, the transition to autumn can also be a very difficult time for a lot of people. With the anticipation of the holidays, we start to feel the joy, celebration, and fanfare that comes along with it. However, for those who have lost someone very important in our lives, it can be difficult to not have them with us to celebrate along with us. If we are not careful, it is easy to let the cold of the season creep into our hearts and bring us down. While these feelings are a normal part of the ebb and flow of life that shifts with the seasons, we should seek to find ways to mitigate the effects of the sadness so we can move forward and enjoy the closing months of the year as best as we can while always seeking to honor and remember the life of our loved one and all the beautiful moments we were lucky enough to share with them.

Especially if we are prone to seasonal sadness in the fall, we need to make sure to prepare ourselves mentally and make a plan. We should seek to make time for the activities that we love so that we can make sure we are creating our own happiness instead of expecting it to come out of nowhere. Regularly engaging in activities we love, especially if it is with people we love, minimizes the risks of feeling alone in your sadness. Others might be going through the same thing we are, so it is important not to isolate and to make sure to be each other’s support system. While it is important to spend time alone to relax and spend time with your thoughts, engaging in social activity is especially crucial in the fall and winter seasons in order to keep our spirits up.

The autumn can be as tough as it can be beautiful. Transitions are never easy, but it is in these moments when we truly grow. We should not try to ignore our feelings this season, whether positive or negative, but rather we should tune in to them, listen to what they are trying to tell us about ourselves, and use that reflectively to grow and find joy in all the moments, all the lessons, and all the seasons that we are lucky enough to experience.
